Coated split leather. The split is the fibrous layer remaining after the grain layer is separated from the hide; the surface is a polyurethane coating applied to the split, not a natural grain. It is not full-grain or top-grain leather.

Why it is like this
We could call this leather and stop there. The grade is split — the lower layer of the hide, after the grain layer has been taken off — and it carries a polyurethane surface coating. Both facts are on the label and on this page.
It behaves well for a tag: it does not stretch, it does not mark, and it will look the same in three years as it does now. What it will not do is develop a patina, because there is a coating in the way.
Natural marks are not faults
Grain varies across a hide. Growth wrinkles, healed insect marks, range scars and shade differences between panels are characteristics of the material and are not grounds on their own for a defect claim. Every article is still covered by the ordinary 30-day return if you simply do not want it.
