1. California Proposition 65

California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, known as Proposition 65, requires a warning before a Californian is exposed to certain listed chemicals. Two things we use fall within it: chrome-tanned and combination-tanned leather, which can involve chromium compounds, and metal hardware, which can contain nickel and traces of lead.

Where a warning applies it is shown on the article page, in the cart and again on the checkout page before you pay. It is not hidden in this document.

Standard wording

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including chromium (hexavalent compounds), which is known to the State of California to cause cancer, and nickel and lead, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Which articles carry a warning

34 of our 38 articles carry a Proposition 65 warning. The remainder are undyed vegetable-tanned articles with no metal hardware, or their hardware is solid brass only:

2. Small parts and children

None of our articles is a toy and none is intended for children. Several include small metal components — brass studs and hooks, a sprung steel frame, a braided steel wire loop with a crimped ferrule, zip pulls — which are a choking hazard if they come loose.

Keep these articles away from children under 3 years. Straps, cords and wire loops are a strangulation risk and must not be given to a child to play with. The waxed cotton drawcords on the pouch set are long enough to be a hazard and should be shortened or removed before anything containing one is given to a household with a small child.

3. What a shielding layer does, and does not

That measurement is a statement about one frequency under one set of conditions. It is not a promise about anything else. We make no claim that this or any article prevents theft, fraud, unauthorised reading, cloning or misuse of your documents or cards. Do not rely on any product as a security measure. Card and document security is a matter for your issuer and for the way you carry things, not for a piece of leather.

Nothing on this site suggests that articles without a shielding layer put you at risk. They do not, and we will not sell by implying otherwise.

4. Materials and sensitivities

Every article is made from bovine leather. No exotic skins are used and nothing we sell contains material from a species listed under CITES. Where an article contains materials other than leather — polyester lining, nylon coil zips, polyester-covered rubber elastic, nylon mesh, waxed cotton cord, brass, nickel-plated steel or stainless steel — those are listed on the article page.

Leather and metal hardware can cause a contact reaction in a small number of people, most often to nickel or to residual tanning agents. If you know you react to nickel, the vegetable-tanned articles with solid brass hardware are the ones to look at. If you develop irritation from prolonged contact, stop using the article and contact us — we will take it back outside the normal return window.

5. Use within reason

These are small leather carriers for documents. They are not protective equipment, not containers for medicines, food or liquids, not fire-resistant and not designed to protect their contents from crushing, immersion or heat.

The article named Divided Fold is a divided pouch. It is not designed, tested or supplied as a container for medicines of any kind, and we make no claim about its suitability for that.

Do not use any article to carry anything sharp, hot or corrosive. Do not modify hardware, re-crimp a steel loop or add a strap that was not supplied — the attachment point is rated for the article as sold.

6. Care and inspection

Check stitching and hardware from time to time, particularly on luggage tags, which take the most abuse. A tag with a stretched strap hole or a loosened stud should be replaced before a trip rather than after one. Full care instructions are in Materials & Care.

7. Reporting a safety concern

If you believe an article is unsafe, stop using it and tell us immediately at support@polarbearleathergoods.shop or +1 909 402 3517. Include your order reference, the article, and a photograph if you can. We acknowledge safety reports within one business day, investigate every one, and will recall a batch if a report warrants it.

Customers in the United States may also report a product safety concern to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.saferproducts.gov. Customers in the European Union and the United Kingdom may report to their national market surveillance authority. We would rather hear from you first, but we will not stand between you and a regulator.
